PARENT COMMITTEE JOB DESCRIPTIONS

s success! Every parent at the
Morris Plains Co-op is required to complete one
parent job per school year. Only one job is required
per family. Below is a list of the current parent jobs.

Room Parent
The Room Parent will function as a link between the board and the other parents. The Room Parent will be asked to communicate with the other parents on an as-needed basis. This includes, but is not limited to: (1) assist with the KidStuff Book Fundraiser (Delivering books / collecting $ or collecting unwanted KidStuff books) (2) reminding parents of their committee jobs they have signed up for at class meetings (i.e. jobs to be completed that quarter); and (3) ensuring that parents “sign-in” at onset of their particular committee job.  The parent may bring issues to the board’s attention as well. There is one Room Parent per class.
Campbell’s Soup Labels
This position will require the parent to periodically check the Campbell’s soup label box located in the office. When the box is full, the parent will need to mail in the labels.  Please ask Betsy for mailing instructions.
Co-op Schedule Coordinator
This position will require the parent to coordinate the co-op schedule and ensure equal “co-oping” turns by parents. There is one Co-op Schedule Coordinator per class.
Decorate 4-Foot Town Christmas Tree
This position will require the parent to decorate a specific four-foot Christmas tree with the children’s artwork (as provided by the teachers) before the Morris Plains holiday parade.  The parade is held on the first Saturday of December. Please confirm the parade date and location of the tree to be decorated with Betsy at the end of November.
Decorations
This position will require the parent to decorate the school (as well as take down decorations at appropriate times) for specific seasons as noted.  The decorations are located in the apartment (downstairs in the basement, to the left of the stairs) in the bathroom closet.  Please ask Betsy or Peggie if you need help in locating the decorations. 
Dress-up clothes
This position will require the parent to collect the dress-up clothes in each classroom and take them home to wash them at the end of the each month during their job assignment. The parent can put the clothes into separate bags for each classroom. It is best to take the clothes home on a Friday, to be returned by Monday morning before classes begin. Also, please let the Parent Committee know if any of the clothes need mending.
Easels
This position will require the parent to clean the easels and paint pots in each classroom once a month for each month the parent signed up for. Please note that this needs to be done when the children are NOT in the classroom. The parent can choose any time of the day that works best. Some easels still require foil. Please ask Betsy where it is located.
Fall Welcome Back Family Event
The Publicity Board Member(s) will contact the parent at the beginning of the school year with their specific needs to help organize our first family event.  The position usually involves help with set up and clean up.
Fall Welcome Back Family Event Photography
Parent takes photos during the Back to School Event to be use in the school scrapbook. If the event is cancelled due to rain parent will be assigned another job/ task.  
Fish Tank
Every Month (or as needed) - replace 75% of the water with distilled water or water that has been set out for a minimum of 24 hours. Water straight from the tap will kill the fish. Use the siphon to pull the old water out. Be sure to vacuum on the rocks, remove the Sponge Bob house and rinse with clean water. Scrub the house, bridge or other tank decorations with a clean sponge. Do not use soap or any other cleanser, as this will also kill the fish. Remove filter and clean out any gunk; replace filter. Use a sponge (should be one on a stick) to clean the inside of the glass. Replace water. Give the fish a little love and hope for the best.
SPRING Fundraiser- Family Portrait Fundraiser
During the spring, we have a family portrait day. This position will require the parent to assist the photographer with the signing in process for about an hour and a half or so on a Saturday (with a rain date of Sunday).
Fundraiser Assistant - This position requires the parent to assist in 1 or 2 fundraising event.  This could include assisting during a fundraiser or distributing orders to parents. Fundraising Board Member will contact you and assign you one fundraising event once list has been established for the school year.
Learning Resource Center (LRC)
The LRC is located on American Road.  It is a place where schools can go to photocopy, laminate, and do other tasks. This position will require the parent to go to the center with whatever is in need of completion.  There are typically one or two trips to the center per month. Please see Betsy or Peggie for a list of tasks to be done.  
Maintaining Website
This position requires some computer skills. Basic knowledge of HTML is helpful, but not necessary. The parent will be taught how to update the site.  Parent is responsible for posting snow cancellations and delays on website.
Memorial Day Parade Float - Prior to Parade
This position will mainly involve the making of the float and helping out in organizing our involvement in the parade. You will also be asked to hand out candy and balloons or whatever fun stuff has been planned for that year the day of the parade
Morris County Library-Order Teacher Books
This position will require the parent to ask teachers, monthly, what books are needed and call the library with the order. Books are delivered and returned by the library.  
Party Planner/Class Photographer
This position will require the parent to help the teacher co-ordinate any party being planned for the class. The parent will also be responsible for taking group and individual photos including: class candids, group shots, field trips, parties and other special events throughout the year for the scrapbook. There is a folder in the office to collect these photos. Each class has a digital camera. Please use the school digital printer and print dock in the apartment to develop the photos.
Project Put Away-Empty Porch Bins
This position will require the parent to periodically check the bins on the front porch that are used to collect art supplies such as baby food jars, egg cartons, tissue boxes, etc. As soon as the bins are moderately full, the parent will store the supplies in their respective places in the basement.
Recycling/Shed Maintenance
This position will require the parent to tie up the cardboard, take out the recycling and make sure the cans in the shed are organized and clean.  Please see Betsy for the Morris Plains recycling schedule (recycling needs to be put out every other Monday since it is picked-up early Tuesday mornings). Betsy will have the specific dates.  This can be done at any time during the day on Monday.
Script Liaison
This position requires the parent to set up a table once a month (x3 months) to accumulate script orders from coop parents and to sell script cards at pickup time.   
Scrapbook
This position will require the parents to create a scrapbook/yearbook about the children and the events that take place during the scholastic year.  The parents can ask the teachers/party planners for any special photos they would like to include. The parents will also be reimbursed up to $20.00 for any supplies purchased. (Note: The basic goal of the scrapbook is to have a little memoir of the playschool.  This is especially beneficial for Betsy so that she can show newcomers an array of events that occur during the year.  This will also help the new parents get a visual of what our school is all about.)  
Smocks/Aprons
This position will require the parent to collect the smocks and aprons in each classroom and take them home to wash them at the end of each of the specific months the parent signed up for. The parent can put the smocks and aprons into separate bags for each classroom or just count them so that each classroom gets the proper amount back. It is best to take them home on a Friday and return them by Monday morning before classes begin.
Staff Appreciation Luncheon-Set up/Clean up
This position will require the parent to assist with set up and/or clean up for the staff appreciation luncheon in June. The parent will be notified of the date.
Organizing Co-op Library/Repairing Co-op Library Books
This position will require the parent to help maintain the co-op library located in the basement. The parent will need to organize and/or repair books as needed.  Please check the library shelves periodically.
